Having a conversation online doesn’t make it more relevant. Reaching out to a wider audience does have its benefits though…

Social media is a tool and a great way of widening a conversation and accessing information. However, it is not a magical way for organisations and individuals to suddenly gain masses of free publicity and celebrity friends. Every communications professional dreads the phrase “go viral” because it means the people you’re working with have bought into the hype.

Our skills for connecting with each other are the same on and offline. People collect in like minded groups so follow interesting tweets, subscribe to exciting and engaging blogs and tag new interesting content. Making the most of social networking is about having the confidence to just use it and in realising that there are very few “social media experts”. The truth is, everyone is learning.
